You can argue about the artistic merits of Sigmund Romberg's The Student Prince and especially the movie which had the voice, but not the fat presence, of Mario Lanza. But you cannot argue about the publicity that it gave Heidelberg. Now tourists flock there expecting to see handsome young students singing Drink, drink, your beer before dashing off for a quick duel.It is not quite like that but Heidelberg absolutely oozes charm although you, like me, may sometimes feel that it is as if Walt Disney had been asked to design a German tourist destination. The name means Heather Hill and the city boasts the world's largest wine barrel at 58,000 gallons. Heidelberg has been around for a long time. Probably at least 800 years. It is in south Germany in a setting of wooded hills on the Neckar river. |
